Women’s varsity lacrosse team plays against North Davidson on Friday March 24. The Raiders won and their record is 8-2.

Spring sports have officially started up again and among those sports is women’s lacrosse. Their season began Feb. 13, and JV has played seven games while varsity has played 10. The JV team has won all their games, except one which they tied with West Forsyth, and varsity has won eight.

The JV team even beat the West Stokes varsity club team. A great experience and a huge accomplishment for them.

Although it is still early, women’s lacrosse is expected to have an exciting season. Both the JV and varsity teams have been training hard with workouts in the winter and now practicing every day after school.

“So far the season has gone great,” said first-time player and junior Sarah Scott who’s on the varsity team, “I really enjoy playing with such wonderful people. Winter workouts were definitely important for me because this is my first year playing, so it gave me the opportunity to get to know the people, coach and game before the season began.”

Lacrosse has been growing in popularity over the past few years and this one is no exception. Women’s lacrosse, particularly the JV team, has gained several newcomers this year, some of whom have never played on a lacrosse team prior to this season.

It may look difficult, but people often find it easy to grasp the concept of lacrosse. It’s similar to many other sports in the aspect that the object of the game is to get a ball into a goal.

Many athletes who participate in field hockey at Reagan also play lacrosse. Like the newcomers, these athletes are often new to the sport of lacrosse, too. However, the sports are alike in some ways which make it is easier for these dual-athletes.

“They are kind of similar,” said JV lacrosse player and sophomore Molly Sytz. “It’s pretty easy to play one and then switch and learn the other.”

Having athletes with all different skill levels put together on one team may seem like it would be difficult. Nonetheless, the women’s lacrosse teams are embracing their differences.

On any sports team, the only way to succeed is if the team works together. That is exactly what the women’s lacrosse teams are focused on doing.

“It can be very difficult at times to do certain drills if the players are at different skill levels,” said JV and varsity women’s lacrosse coach Lisa Smith. “However, the teams work well together. It gets better as they work together and trust each other more. We have team events to help the girls bond more as well.”

It will be very interesting and exciting to see what the women’s lacrosse teams accomplish this season. Both teams have high hopes and are ready to work together and work hard to fulfill their goals.
