2022 Reagan spring sports preview
The Reagan spring sports season is underway-get an inside look at five teams’ goals challenges, rivals and more
Women’s Soccer
Head Coach: Jay Callahan
Players to Watch: The team has a pretty large number of returning players, and some younger members new to the team. A number of new players that should make the list
Rivals: The rivals are West Forsyth, Mount Tabor, R.J. Reynolds, and East Forsyth – those are the stronger teams in the conference.
Significant Games: Those same games as conference rivals, and the games against Grimsley and South Iredell.
Goals for the Season: Win the conference. That’s the first goal. They have to do that before thinking about playoffs.
Anticipated Challenges: A challenge is to get the players to be happy with the role that they play on the team. It’s always a challenge to get them to buy into their role, especially if they played a different role on their club team.
College Bound Players: Charlotte Craver – Montreat College
Quote from Coach: “We should be doing pretty well this year.,” coach Callahan said. “We have a great coaching staff, and great student athletes.”
Track
Head coach: Richard Burton
Players to Watch: On the men’s side, Vincent Wilkins, Thaddeus Malatlian, Allen Thacker, Andrew Steele, Jalil Rogers, Spencer Webb, Nate Hayes, Tate Shore, Garreth Fulcher and Jay Keeley. On the women’s side, Maia Grant, Kira Lewis, Karina Macosko, Brianna Cottingham, Sarah Fassinger, Kate Henderson and Tori Clinger.
Rivals: There are really no rivals going into the season, but the biggest competition in the conference will be Mount Tabor and West Forsyth.
Significant Games: The track meets at Cuthbertson, called the Clash of the Carolinas. The conference will be held at Reagan in April. Also the team are always gearing up for the Conference, Regional and State Championship meet.
Goals for the Season: With understanding that they must push ourselves in practice to accomplish these goals. To win Conference, win Regionals, win States and leave a legacy is always the goal.
Anticipated Challenges: “Challenges are always the health, weather and just making sure that our bodies and minds are right for the moments that we must execute,” coach Burton said.
Men’s Golf
Head coach: Jay Allred
Players to Watch: Gavin Deibler, Cooper Diaz, Adams Mutai, Tanner Welborn, Kyle Wait and Fletcher Grubbs.
Rivals: R.J. Reynolds, because they finished first in the conference last year and second in the state. Also, West Forsyth has a great team.
Significant Games: Matches at Maple Chase. Home course will play to the team’s advantage.
Goals for the season: The goal is to win conference and to advance to regionals and states.
Anticipated Challenges: Players will just have to relax and remain composed for the entire round.
College bound Players: Cam Witherspoon- Virginia Union.
Quote from Coach: “We have seen a dramatic change in the commitment to the team in the off season,” coach Allred said. “We look forward to this change in culture of the team.”
Baseball
Head Coach: Gary Nail
Players to Watch: Carter Boyd, Austin Hawke and Nick Lundquist
Rivals: West Forsyth, Mount Tabor and East Forsyth
Significant Games: Northwest Guilford, Providence, East Forsyth, West Forsyth, Ardrey Kell and the spring break tournament in Charleston, South Carolina.
Goals for the Season: Practice hard, get better daily, compete in the conference championship and make a “deep run” in the state playoffs.
Anticipated Challenges: Conference. It’s one of the best in the state, and all of the teams that compete are really good.
College bound Players: Carter Boyd- Arkansas, Austin Hawke- UNC and Nick Lundquist- NC A&T.
Quote from Coach: “Some players will need to step up and contribute in a big way for us to have the kind of season I think we can have,” coach Nail said.
Men’s Tennis
Head Coach: Scott Larson
Players to Watch: Parkman Cook, Bennett Russell, Ethan Stuart, and William Kelly
Significant Matches: Davie, West Forsyth and Mount Tabor
Goals for the Season: To win the conference, but a top three finish would be great.
