Over Thanksgiving break I had the pleasure of going to see “The Man Who Invented Christmas.” All my expectations were met in this very jolly Christmas film.

The film starts off in New York in 1842 after the release of Charles Dickens’(Dan Stevens) recently published book, “Oliver Twist.. The novel is a huge success and by then everyone had come to know his name.

The movie then jumps ahead 16 months to London after Dickens has released three more books that have not done as well his previous ones.

While trying to find the story he wants to write about for his new book, he finds inspiration in many things, such as his housemaid’s (Anna Murphy) story that she tells his children, and running into a man who becomes the basis for his main character, Ebenezer Scrooge (Christopher Plummer).

He has writer’s block until he meets the man that is similar to Scrooge in a graveyard. Dickens really finds the inspiration when the man came up to him and said “humbug.”

In the film, Dickens meets the characters in his story, and he creates their names and identity. He bases his characters off of people he has met. For example he uses his nephew to create Tiny Tim.

After overcoming the obstacles, Dickens prevails and creates a happy ending for himself and the his book, “A Christmas Carol.”

He struggles with self-identity, the characters in his head that come to life through his writing, and his past and present relationships.

In the story, Dickens is forced to relive his past and the people that affected his childhood. He had a rough childhood and many things, one being the return of his father in his live, cause him to have to face something that still haunted his life.

The best scene in the film was when Dickens comes up with the name “Scrooge” after struggling for a while and the character appears as if Scrooge was a real person. Other characters that Dickens creates are Martha Cratchit (Ava May Taylor) and Mrs. Fezziwig (Annette Badland).

There were some parts in the middle of the movie that were a little slow. In the beginning and later on, it took a while to develop a conflict that would later be overcomed in the end.

Also, the plot was a little hard to follow sometimes in the middle of the film due to flashbacks that were sudden and transitions that weren’t very smooth.

I was very excited when I saw the cast list for the movie. I expected the cast to be great, but I was almost shocked by how well their performances were. The entire cast was very comfortable in their roles and did a wonderful job.

Plummer and Stevens were especially phenomenal in portraying their characters on screen. Their performances in the film are award-winning.

The transitions between scenes and special effects used in the film were great. You can tell that the creators put a lot of time and effort in to how well the editing and the visual effects were done very well.

I would give this movie a very high rating because the story plot was very original and very creative. The cast did very well and fully embraced their characters to make them seem very alive.

You should go see this movie over the holidays. I promise that you won’t be disappointed.
