Have you ever had an issue finding a book you need? Has the Dewey Decimal System ever tripped you up? If you are not a common visitor, to the media center, or even if you are, it may still be a complicated place to navigate.

The Reagan media specialists has decided to make it easier for all students and staff to find the books of their desire or the books they need for class. They have organized the media center into a more efficient way for finding the books you want.

A solution found to ease your trouble of locating a book is what they call “genrefying.” This is understood as “the process or idea of classifying music, film, literature, or other such mediums into specific genres or categories.”

Although the Media Center does not have most of those mediums, Lauren-Davis Fossa the media coordinator decided it would be best if all fiction genres, such as horror and suspense, realistic , mystery, science, fantasy and even romance, were separated

“These are all real genres that have already been made, I didn’t make any of them up,”  Fossa said.

The media center may seem more inviting now that you don’t have to worry about the struggle of finding the section you need to be in.

“You now don’t have to know so much about books or authors now to be able to find something you like,” Fossa said. “Books you may enjoy are now surrounded by the books that have already taken your interest.”

This process of genrefying the books has taken around four years. The process takes lots of work and concentration. The librarians have been working since the beginning of the school year trying to quickly get everything done.

“Lots of work has been put into completing this task,” Fossa said. “Although everything is organized in the media center in the back rooms there are piles of fiction books we are still working on the organizing as well.”

Not only does the media center staff have to organize the books in the correct order, they also have to update the online catalogue in order to be able to find the book.

If you were to walk into the media center and look around, you would see light green signs telling you which fiction genre is where. Books other than fiction are in the same locations as they were before. No decision has been made on whether to move them as well with all of the work fiction is taking.

Not only does Fossa have to complete this huge task, she still has to tend to the needs of the administrators and teachers with all of their technical computer and television needs.

“I’m glad we have done this for our students and hope that everyone finds this new system helpful for all their book needs,” Fossa said.
