For the last few years, students have anxiously awaited the return of the popular event well known for its gender reversal on the football field: powder puff.

Powder puff is a football game where the players have “switched roles” with girls taking to the field to compete against each other in a game of flag football, while boys are able to coach from the sidelines and participate as cheerleaders.

As of now, there are over 80 girls signed up to participate in the Powder Puff game. All grades are allowed to participate, and all of Reagan is included in the fun. Because of the high student interest, there will be two games: freshmen against sophomores and juniors against seniors.

There are roughly 20 to 25 girls on each team, with one student coach per team.

The participants will have two practices in the weeks leading up to the big game, where the girls will practice for the game by running drills, learning all of the rules of flag football, and getting a handle on the game in order to be completely ready to compete.

Powder puff is not played only for the entertainment value. The event will work as a fundraiser for Raiders Against Poverty, a new club at Reagan. The money will go towards building a food pantry that will support both Reagan families and other local families in need.

Teachers Doug Balser and April Sapp have been a large help to making the return of Powder Puff so successful, giving the students tips for the game and providing spaces for meetings. They’ve also helped the teams acquire t-shirts, organize practice times, and collect forms from the students.

Junior Meagan Brown is in charge of the event.

“The whole reason I wanted Powder Puff to come back was to make some great memories, because that’s what high school should be about,” Brown said. “The real goal is to just have fun and raise money for a great cause.”

The games will be at Reagan on May 19, and the club will be accepting cans as donations. All of Reagan’s staff and students are encouraged to go out to support their friends and coworkers to help raise money to support the local community. Here’s to hoping that Powder Puff will once again become an annual tradition at Reagan.
