Counterpoint- New Taylor Swift “ME!”

I have loved Taylor Swift since I was in the sixth grade.  Her music always made me want to get up to sing and dance. Though I didn’t enjoy all of her last album “Reputation,” a majority of the songs were still fun and catchy.

Swift only recently transitioned to a darker more edgy style with a more pop and techno style for her last album, but now she has changed again.  With the release of her first song “ME!” from her upcoming album, she has decided to change her look again, making it more colorful with the main color being pink.  Though her Instagram feed is very satisfying, I liked her edgy style better; it was fun and something new.

The new style definitely hyped up the fans.  Posting mysterious photos in various pink shades with the date “4.26” as the photo’s caption caught everyone’s attention.  Though I think the new look fits Swift’s personality, I wish she would just decide how she wants her style to be and stick to it for a little while.

The song “ME!” as a whole sounds fine, but is childish.  I was very excited to hear she was singing a duet with Brendon Urie.  I have always liked Panic! At the Disco’s music, and I never thought a collaboration like this would happen.  I was very interested to see what kind of style they would go for.

Unfortunately their song was a disappointment to me.  It was okay, but not something I would want to listen to on repeat or scream in the car while I’m driving.  The song was repetitive and honestly sounded like a song for elementary schoolers.

I’m not upset that she is back to her happy bubbly music; however, I expected her music to have more uniqueness and really stand out.  At this point I feel like her music is continuously having less and less meaning. I enjoyed the Swift that was very unique and no other music sounded just like hers.  If I turned on the radio any pop song would sound just like this.

The only aspect I truly like about this song is that it goes against the stereotype that people have to fit a certain mold.  The song talks about celebrating yourself because no one else is like you, and that alone is significant.

I love Swift and will continue to support her no matter how many changes she makes.  My only hope is that one day she returns to her roots and starts producing songs with more heart and emotion.  I still believe even though I am not a huge fan of “ME!,” the rest of the album will be spectacular.
