Women’s History Month
April 16, 2018
Valiant, empowering and worthy. These three words are just a few of many adjectives that describe a woman. From Susan B. Anthony, a highly ambitious women’s rights activist, to Harriet Tubman, an inspiring abolitionist throughout the 1800s, women have contributed to fight the constant issue of inequality among women and men.
March is coming to an end, meaning Women’s History Month . This month was all about honoring each and every woman who has made a significant contribution to the history, culture and society that changed the lives of many.
Women around the world band together this month in commemoration of each of the inspiring women who have played a vital role in fighting the ongoing discrimination against women.
Although Women’s History Month is widely celebrated, it was not always easy to gain support for such a powerful month. The first event of appreciation for women and their roles in society began at a school event in California. No one knew this one event would start a chain reaction of support for an even bigger event.
After years of attempting to gain support for a global celebration of women, it wasn’t until Feb. of 1980, that President Jimmy Carter declared the week of March 8th as National Women’s History Week for that specific year. Later it was declared as the National Women’s History Week of 1981 as well.
After an increase in support from many states and Congress, by the year of 1987, March was deemed National Women’s History Month indefinitely. It was the first time in history that women would be celebrated and honored during a whole month for their achievements they have accomplished throughout the years.
Each year, the Women’s History Month has a specific theme that many speak on and celebrate. This year’s theme was “Nevertheless, She Persisted: Honoring Women Who Fight All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.”
Along with a theme for Women’s History Month each year, there is a group of honorees that consist of females who have made a tireless effort to positively shape the society. These women have fought against discrimination among women along with other injustices that involve ethnicity, class and other categories.
This month, there were five main events held throughout. Some of these events included the dates of March 8-10 which was a demonstration at the National Museum of the American Indian. The museum celebrated the art of both Carla Hemlock and Naomi Smith over the course of these three days.
March 10 was a family day held at the Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center in which families participated in activities to honor the women that have contributed to the future of space and aviation.
March 12 was predicted to gain the most support from women around the world as they gathered in the Library of Congress to speak to Donna Gigliotti, award-winning producer of the film “Hidden Figures.” Women were also be allowed the opportunity to speak to Margot Lee Shetterly, author of the “Hidden Figures” book.
For many years, women have been judged, stereotyped, excluded, deprived of basic human rights, ridiculed and silenced. They have been facing numerous social injustices since the beginning of time. Women have come together for decades to form movements and societies that constantly battle against these injustices.
Even in the present day, women are constantly changing the world to fight against inequality. The most significant of these fights against inequality is the recent Women’s Marches that have been held all over the United States.
Not only have women come together in response to these issues, but men have joined forces with women, as they should, to create an even stronger force that has been constantly gaining great amounts of increasing support.
Strength in numbers has certainly played the most important role in the fight for equality for women. Without a substantial amount of support for one another, women would not have been able to achieve these incredible contributions that have been inflicted on the culture throughout the years.
It is important that each and every individual make it an all-around goal to fight injustices that create an unfair and cruel injustices towards women in order to maintain a stable society. Regardless of gender, everyone should join together in the month of March each year, to show appreciation for all the brave women who have sacrificed so much for society.
