Why Hallmark movies should never be shown

December 3, 2017

As a child I was forced to watch Hallmark Christmas movies with my mom.  She adores these movies, but I’ve never understood why.  To me the movies lack excitement and genuine emotion.

I don’t think one should  watch Hallmark movies on their own unless they are forced or are genuinely that bored.  If one is really that bored, I suggest watching grass grow;  it is definitely more entertaining.

Personally, I prefer the Christmas films on Freeform.  Movies on Freeform are well done and mix up their plots.  Though some are obviously lower production movies, most have good actors and actresses as a well-thought-out scripts and great props.

Many people get excited over movies shown by Hallmark.  Almost all Hallmark movies seem to be low budget products with pathetic, poorly thought out, scripts.  They often include the same plot, making them very predictable and boring to watch.

“I dislike Hallmark movies because the plots are always very predictable,” said junior Gracie Comer.  “Most usually portray a girl falling ‘heads over heels’ for a guy and they end up falling in love, which isn’t realistic.  Our lives are faced with challenges and tribulations which is what makes the love we experience so great. I’d prefer watching a realistic movie compared to a movie that gives me false hope for my future relationships.”

Hallmark movies also seem to have poor acting and include actors who are just starting and or those who gotten so bad that this is their only way to get a job.  For example in Hallmark’s “Just in Time for Christmas,” Christopher Lloyd has a role.  He most famously played Emmett “Doc” Brown in “Back to the Future” and has had few other major memorable roles.  Another case of this would be in “A Christmas Detour,” where Candace Cameron Bure, an actress from “Full House,” has a starring role.  Though she has appeared in other movies and shows, not many have gotten the attribution “Full House” has.

“I only really watch Hallmark movies during Christmas time, but even then they have a very basic plot that applies to every movie,” said freshman Miriam Vazquez.  “Hallmark movies also use a lot of the same actors and actresses.  I prefer to watch Freeform Christmas movies because they are classics.”

I understand that some people think that Christmas Hallmark movies are a classic, but I cannot even name one Hallmark movie off the top of my head that is watched every year.  When I think about Christmas movies, I think about the wide variety of movies that play on Freeform’s 25 days of Christmas.  Holiday classics include “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Elf,” “The Polar Express,” “The Santa Claus” and “A Year Without Santa Claus,” just to name a few.

“Hallmark movies are just the leftover pieces of garbage that were unable to make it onto Freeform’s 25 Days of Christmas,” said sophomore Jackson Hall.

Christmas movies on Hallmark do not get people in the mood for Christmas, nor do they bring joy to a household.  All Hallmark Christmas movies are dull and stylistically lacking, everything about the movies are so staged and fake I do not see how that can make one excited about Christmas.  These movies actually suppress my Christmas spirit and make me want to say “humbug.”  Hallmark movies can not be a staple of christmas if people are unaware that they even exist.

“I don’t even know what a Hallmark movie is,” said sophomore Hector Chavez-Lugo.  “I have never seen one of their movies.”
