Men’s golf swings for victory

Reagan’s men’s golf team are setting themselves up for success this spring season. The team has their eyes on winning conference and regionals, and making a strong showing in the state tournament.

The team has ambitious goals with a reputation to back it up.

“We have several talented players who work hard and have a lot of golf experience,” said Jim Macon, the men’s golf coach. “Some of them will definitely contend for player of the year in the conference.”

The season is off to a great start, as the men’s golf team set a school record in their first match of the season when they shot 1-over par 145 against Mount Tabor.

“So far the season is going great,’ said senior Chad Lynch, the men’s golf team captain. “We have won our first three matches by a wide margin, beating Tabor in all three. Hopefully we can continue our good play.”

Like every team, they face obstacles that interfere with the path to their goals. The team’s biggest challenges include a lack of match experience in certain positions and the weather, which is unpredictable during this time of the year and affects how they play.

Another hindrance is the length of golf matches. They require players to leave school at varying times, between one to two hours before the end of the day.  The players have to get to the match and then warm up, a process that can be drawn-out and take awhile.

“We try to minimize the amount of time students lose during class,” Macon said. “We have the option to arrange match times and therefore can have a later start.”

However, some players have a positive outlook on getting to the matches early.

“I like being able to leave school because it gives us a chance to get some practice in before the round,” said Jerry Easter, a senior. “By doing this it gives us a better chance to be more successful and play to the best of our abilities.”

Golf is the type of sport that you can continue to play well after high school. Golf can be used as a stress reliever, a profession, a hobby or to just pass time. In golf, you can continue to improve your skills after playing on a team and turn it into a career, with many more opportunities to play.

“I plan on continuing my golf career,” said Sam Uberseder, a junior. “My goal has always been to play in college.”

The team’s success isn’t as well broadcast as some of the other sports but the team still has good interest.

“As a team we need to stay focused and patient in each of our tournaments,” Macon said. “We have an opportunity to have the most successful season in Reagan golf team history.”
